Swidnik is located in the Lublin province, in the district of Swidnica, about 10 km east of Lublin. The first mention of Swidnik comes from 1392, when the source name appears Swidnik Great (Maior Swidnik or the Magna Swydnyk).

Swidnik is one of the youngest cities in Poland.  City rights granted in 1954.
